What To Do When You Lose Your Car Keys

You may think that it will never happen to you, but people lose their car keys all the time. Even the most responsible person may leave a set of keys in a restaurant, on an amusement park ride, or in a restroom somewhere. And anyone with young children can tell you that they can find the most amazing places to hide keys. If they're too young to talk, you may be out of luck!
The truth is, there is no reason to panic if you lose your car keys. If you've retraced your steps, checked all your pockets, checked with your travel partner to see if they have them, and done everything reasonable to recover your lost car keys and can't find them, you'll need to call an automotive locksmith.
If you drive a newer model car, your car dealer may have told you that you have to go through the dealer to get replacement keys made. Except in a tiny minority of special cases, this is not true. Today's licensed, bonded, insured automotive locksmiths have the equipment necessary in their vans or mobile shops to replace keys for new cars and to do it quickly.
Cars today have special keys that contain an encoded computer chip so that they will only work with your car. Replacing them is not the same as cutting a new key back in your parents' generation. Locksmiths have special hardware and software to encode a new key so that it will work with your particular car, and they usually do it at a fraction of the cost you would pay if you got your dealer to do it.
If you're in a big city like Chicago, you want to know that your locksmith can get to you promptly no matter what part of town you're in. You want a Chicago locksmith with the qualifications and skills needed to get you rolling again as soon as possible. That's just one reason why you should consider getting a spare set of car keys made before you need them. That way you can see for yourself if the locksmith is courteous, professional, and charges a fair price for their services. If you keep your extra keys with a trusted person, whether they're traveling with you or not, you'll greatly reduce your need to have to call out a locksmith in the middle of the night somewhere. But if you do, it's OK.
Locksmiths deal with car key replacements all the time. Once they arrive and determine that you need, say, Ford transponder keys for your 2007 Ford Focus, they will use a transponder blank and program it so that it will operate your car, and it won't take long either. It doesn't matter whether they're dealing with lost Volkswagen keys, lost Honda keys, lost GM keys or lost Lexus keys - they can make a new key for your car, so there's no reason to panic if you lose yours.
